So you may be wondering how bad sulphates in hair products really are. Let’s start with explaining what sulphates are, they’re detergents, or surfactants, commonly found in products like shampoo, body wash, face cleanser, and toothpaste (in addition to household cleaning products, like laundry and dish detergent). So surely if they are found in household products they can’t be great for your hair? Sulphates create a lather when water is added, of course some of you may say the more lather the better right? Well that’s not the case, you don’t need a great lather to make sure your hair is clean.

The concern has to do with the state these detergents may leave your locks in. Sulphate based hair products remove the oil and dirt from the hair and in the long run completely stripping the natural oils and protein (about 91 percent of each of your hair fibres is protein, along with numerous other nutrients) found in your hair, leaving your luscious locks feeling lifeless, brittle and dry. They can also leave your scalp feeling dry, itchy and irritated.  Hair products containing sulphates may also contribute to acne around your hairline and back, (which is exposed in the shower). Also if you have coloured hair (let’s be honest most of us do) sulphates contribute to stripping the colour quicker, making it fade quicker.

For the long term results – both in terms of hair health, colour maintenance, hair protein retention and damage prevention – it’s definitely worth thinking about switching from a typical mass market shampoo to a healthier sulphate-free shampoo.

This is why at so many salons are in love sulphate-free hair products.
